“Walk and Talk”
Counselling, or any kind of therapy, can be a nerve wracking and daunting experience to begin with. Everyone is so unique and therapeutic interventions should be unique too and catered to every individual and their needs for effective and positive outcomes.
Not everyone responds well or feels comfortable engaging in therapy in traditional counselling settings, like clinics or wellness centers and that is ok! Some people are not comfortable with telehealth or phone sessions, and this is also perfectly ok!
So to try and cater for people who prefer to do things differently, I love offering “Walk and Talk” sessions to combine the benefits of talking therapy, gentle exercise and movement and the calming power of mother nature.
Benefits of “Walk and Talk”
1. Increased mobility: Walk and talk counselling not only gives you the opportunity to talk about whatever is on your mind, but it also encourages you to get some fresh air in the process. This increases the circulation of blood and oxygen in your body, increasing energy levels, improves mood, clears your head and improves general health and wellbeing.
2. Improved self-awareness: Walking and talking together allows you to be more in tune with your body and the changes that occur while moving. This can help you become more aware of any physical or emotional distress you may be experiencing.
3. More naturalistic assessment: By getting to know you in more natural environments like outdoors, counsellors can gain valuable insight into how you interact with your environment and the people around you.
4. Positive health benefits: Walking increases a person’s heart rate and releases endorphins. In turn, this can increase self-esteem, reduced stress and promote feelings of calmness.
5. More creative sessions: Walk and talk counselling helps to create a more informal atmosphere that encourages openness and creativity in the therapeutic process. The change of scenery can provide further inspiration for new and innovative approaches to therapy.
